Darth Across America

A cross country portrait series in the making by photographer Julie Schuchard.

Why portraits with a Darth Vader mask?

Who is the darkest and most famous villain of all times? Vader. Darth Vader.

I’m a San Francisco based portrait photographer about to embark on a road trip across the U.S. My goal is to create a series of photos that embody the spirit of America. America in a jet black Vader helmet.

As Americans, we may differ by our geography, our politics, our ethnicity and our religion—but we all share deep cultural love for Star Wars. There is no question about that.

When I was 4, I remember waiting in line for hours at a small theater
in Kalispell, Montana to see the first Star Wars. To this day, images from the film inspire a flood of childhood memories, stealing action figures from my brother and wrapping giant buns around my head for several Halloween costumes. Everyone has a Star Wars story.

The Darth Vader theme unites us nostalgically, and the mask allows us the anonymity to be expressive in front of the camera in a new way. With the landscape of America as a backdrop, this series will bring together all the things I love about being a photographer and using art to unite and connect people from all walks of life.
